The term “wellness“ has become more commonplace over the past decade. We hear about “wellness centers” opening in our communities, “school wellness policies” being implemented in our kids' schools and “wellness programs” offerred at our jobs, but wellness still eludes many of us.
The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.
But understanding what wellness means is just the first step in building a powerfully healthy and happy life. We must embody wellness as a personal virtue.
We are driven towards health and fitness magazines, cookbooks with quick and easy recipes, and expensive gym memberships, although a paradox still remains in our inability to successfully lead healthy lives. According to the recently published report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, “F as in Fat”, during the past 30 years adult obesity rates have doubled and childhood obesity rates have more than tripled.
So what are we missing?
We are missing the fact that wellness is not something you do, it is who you are. And this disconnect is manifesting itself in our lives as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and depression.
Wellness is a personal lifestyle that is built upon the empowered choices we make about our thoughts, behaviors and environments. At The Power Punch, we focus on living healthy and living powerful!
